Learning and Growing in 2023 and 2024
This was a learning year for me. I learned about myself and my family and my team and the world around us.
I learned a little bit about overcoming perfectionism, getting into the arena, leading a sales team, being more present at home, and using my time effectively.
I am excited to continue learning about these things (and many more) in 2024.
I hope you also can look back and realize how much you learned this year.
I always enjoy Kent Hendricks end of year blog about 52 things that he learned, and - in the spirit of learning - I thought I’d share a few of those tidbits from 2023 here:
#4: Costco is responsible for 50% of all cashew sales in the world. (“Costco Clothing Is Cheap. WSJ Readers Love It. But Is It Actually Good Value?”)
#9: One in five mammals is a bat. (“Why are there so many species of bat?”)
#12: 44.4% of people have one joint on their pinkie toe and 55.3% have two. (“How many joints does the 5th toe have? A review of 606 patients of 655 foot radiographs”)
#16: Nobody knows what the “p” in “pH” stands for. (“When it comes to caustic wit and an acid tongue, mind your Ps and Qs”)
#51: If Martin Luther visited a city, it was 18.6 percentage points more likely to become Protestant, but if he just sent a letter, it was only 13.6 percentage points more likely to become Protestant. A total of 36% of all cities Luther either wrote to our visited adopted the Reformation. (“Multiplex Network Ties and the Spatial Diffusion of Radical Innovations: Martin Luther’s Leadership in the Early Reformation”)
Here’s to a 2024 filled with new insights, captured opportunities, and expanded minds! Cheers!
Bach, Possibility, and Perfection
What would an end-of-the-year Trevor newsletter be without a little Yo-Yo Ma?
Here is one of my all-time favorites of the Bach cello suites with some of Yo-Yo Ma’s reflections superimposed on the performance.
I thought this was fitting for the end of the year:
This was especially pertinent for me:
Nothing is perfect. Perfection is not achievable. So if we can actually admit that, then we can deal with everything.
And with that, I hope you enjoyed the 30th edition of The Build-Up Weekly, and the last for 2023. Big things to come in 2024!
With best wishes to you and your families,
Trevor Kimball, PhD
